Grandparents pledge $100,000 to new school

The Grandparents Committee's second event, Lunch and Learn on Thursday, May 19, was a huge success. Thirty grandparents came to share lunch with students, chat, and experience the excitement that takes place at CJHS. Following Birkat HaMazon, led by freshman David Weltman, participants reconvened for the study session, "How CJHS Students Study Text" with Rabbi Elliot Goldberg. Rabbi Goldberg guided participants through an exercise on Pshat and Drash, focusing on Hoshea chapter six. Grandparents walked away not only with a greater understanding of the text and how their grandchildren study it at CJHS, but also with pockets full of goodies such as t-shirts and CJHS bracelets.

The session concluded with a tour of the building and excitement for future programming. Additional excitement was created when a special announcement was made by Roberta Charous, member of the Grandparents Committee, and grandmother of Deanna and Linda Levin. Mrs. Charous announced the committee's pledge of $100,000 toward the campaign, which includes construction of the new school building. Grandparents will be recognized for this gift by having a classroom named in their honor in the new facility. The pledge will be doubled through the $1.5 million challenge grant from Stewart and Jennifer Flink. The gift brings the total raised to nearly $700,000 with less than one month until the June 15 deadline.

If you have any questions about the committee or participating in the grandparents' naming opportunity, please call the Development Office at 847-470-6700. Many thanks to everyone involved in the success of the afternoon.

CJHS welcomes Solomon Schechter seventh graders

About 140 students were walking through the halls on May 18 as CJHS welcomed the Class of 2011 for its annual 7th grade Sager Solomon Schechter visiting day. Fifty-five 7th graders attended, which meant CJHS had nearly 140 students to accommodate in classrooms and hallways. Visiting students observed classes with CJHS students and toured the facility. The 7th graders also had fun socializing with the CJHS freshmen and sophomores over Dip n Dots ice cream during a social before heading back to Schechter. The students returned to Northbrook with a CJHS "Got Milk and Honey" Israel t-shirt. A special thank you to Oly Avidar, Sara Coven, Jennifer Flink, Michelle Seidenberg and Lynn Wiznitzer for helping with the event.

Precalculus Students Build Parabolic Solar Cookers

"Project Marshmallow" is coming to its exciting climax! After many weeks of careful buliding and calculations, the juniors and seniors in precalculus have completed their parabolic reflectors. These miniature solar dishes, between 15 inches and 3 feet in diameter, are designed to focus solar rays to a central point.

On Monday the 16th, Mrs. Eliaser's classes tested the effectiveness of their models by roasting marshmallows, solar-cooker style! The winning junior design, crafted by Avram Pachter, Maddie Miller, and Jacob Shapiro, used an aluminum foil-coated paraboloid mounted in a cardboard box to achieve a final cooking temperature of 101.9 degrees. The winning senior design, built by Phil Kostov and Noam Davidoff, featured a mylar surface overlaid on a skeletal understructure of craft sticks and copper wire, achieving a final cooking temperature of 100 degrees! Stay tuned for Part II, results from Ms. Gitlin's classes!

Physics Day at Six Flags Great America

Where would you look in an amusement park if you wanted to find an example of the Doppler Effect? Ask any one of the juniors and seniors who are studying physics this year! After months of modeling velocity, momentum, energy, and centripetal acceleration of carts on tracks, Mrs. Eliaser's physics class got a chance to apply these skills to a real live roller coaster! CJHS physicists joined students from all over Chicagoland to run experiments at Six Flags Great America, investigating the principles behind the rides they know and love.
