Schechter seventh graders visit CJHS

The CJHS student body nearly doubled in size on May 12 as CJHS welcomed the Class of 2010 for its annual 7th grade Sager Solomon Schechter visiting day. About 60 students attended, which meant CJHS had more than 120 students to accommodate in classrooms and hallways. Visiting students observed classes with CJHS students and toured the facility.

The 7th graders also had fun socializing with the CJHS freshmen class over Dip n Dots ice cream during a social before heading back to Schechter. The students returned to Northbrook with a CJHS "Israel is my Homeland" t-shirt.

A special thank you to Hebrew teacher Ms. Nehorai, Spanish Department Chair Mrs. Linda, Bible teacher Mrs. Halivni, Biology teacher Mr. Jablanovic, English teacher Ms. Dickman and Physics teacher Ms. Eliaser for accommodating the guests into their classrooms.

CJHS juniors and seniors celebrate 'Prom'

Junior Miriam Balinsky with a friend on the bus to Second City.

CJHS juniors and seniors and their friends celebrated "Prom" by attending a show at Second City on May 8. . The event was planned by junior Jessie Silverman with much effort from Student Activities Director Mr. Schultz. A special thank you to chaperones Executive Director Inez Altman and Bible teachers Rabbi Dickman and Ms. Halivni.

CJHS students build parabolic dish solar cooker

Ms. Gitlin's and Ms. Bierman's pre-calculus classes built parabolic marshmallow roasters after completing units on conic sections. Based on the same technology used for satellite dishes, the student's roasters all succeed in raising the internal temperatures of the marshmallows that they roasted. Joseph Waldman and Deanna Levin designed the model that produced the highest temperature as well as the greatest change in temperature. Their marshmallow got so hot that it melted off of the stick. Congratulations to all participants!

Custodian presents WWII and Cold War from Soviet perspective

Alex Kosarev, CJHS custodian, lectured to the 10th grade history classes about WWII from the Soviet perceptive. He explained that the Soviet people were disappointed that the Americans provided only supplies and not troops to fight on the eastern front. He also showed his father's medals from the war and both his and his father's certificate of military service.

CJHS choir sings for the elderly

Members of the CJHS Choir sang on May 7 at the Friends Center in Deerfield. The residents were delighted by the choir, and loved the soloists sophomore Renana Fox, freshmen Jennifer Hipps, Rachel Karp, Renana Fox, and Naomi Goldberg. Afterwards, members of the choir visited with residents, and helped pass out cookies and drinks. Thank you to Mrs. Gottlieb and Rabbi Dickman for their participation.

Physics students enjoy field trip

CJHS physics students visited Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, home of the world's largest particle accelerator on May 11. Dr. Heidi Schellman and Dr. Paul Nienaber took the group around the main control room and several sites on MiniBooster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE). Students also had the chance to stop at the prairie preserve to say hello to the newborn buffalo calves.

College counseling staff attends conference

Director of College Counseling Mrs. Kravets and College Counseling Associate Ms. Lifshen attended the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling annual conference held May 5-7 in Itasca, Ill. The conference brought together nearly 800 college admissions professionals from colleges and high schools around the state for professional development and networking opportunities. Mrs. Kravets led workshop sessions on getting involved with the association at the local and national level and on counseling the special needs student.

Students volunteer at the Ark

Juniors Judah Rubin, Garrett Jacobs, sophomore Ashley Silver, and freshmen Yoel Saffir and Geoff Levin, volunteered at the Ark Cafe on May 10. Thank you to junior Jessie Silverman for coordinating the volunteer and all the students and faculty who participated this school year.

Tennis team competes

The men's tennis team has played five matches this season against Highland Park, Deerfield, Glenbrook North, New Trier and Glenbrook South High Schools. The team features senior Zach Berkman, junior Joe Waldman, sophomores Benji Derman, Avram Pachter, Jason Wiznitzer, and freshmen Leore Avidar, Aaron Magid and Brian Pogrund.

The format has been to play an 8-game pro-set in singles and then the same in doubles, or 2 singles matches.

"The team has done remarkably well for the little time they have practiced," Tennis coach and Board President Mr. Flink said. "They adjust to new doubles partners, work hard, try their best, and do not complain. Probably the best part of the experience is that the other coaches and parents of our opponents have remarked again and again how well behaved our players are and what good sportsmen they have been. Every coach has asked us to play again next year. In addition, every player on the team has one at least one match."

Buy a yearbook

Buy your CJHS yearbook by May 28 it only costs $25. After the deadline the price rises to $35. For the first time the yearbook staff is teaming up with the video yearbook staff. If you purchase your CJHS video yearbook with the print yearbook it costs $10 instead of $15.
