Schechter seventh graders visit CJHS
The CJHS student body nearly doubled in size
on May 12 as CJHS welcomed the Class of 2010 for its annual 7th
grade Sager Solomon Schechter visiting day. About 60 students attended,
which meant CJHS had more than 120 students to accommodate in classrooms
and hallways. Visiting students observed classes with CJHS students
and toured the facility.
The 7th graders also had fun socializing with the
CJHS freshmen class over Dip n Dots ice cream during a social before
heading back to Schechter. The students returned to Northbrook with
a CJHS "Israel is my Homeland" t-shirt.
A special thank you to Hebrew teacher Ms. Nehorai,
Spanish Department Chair Mrs. Linda, Bible teacher Mrs. Halivni,
Biology teacher Mr. Jablanovic, English teacher Ms. Dickman and
Physics teacher Ms. Eliaser for accommodating the guests into their
classrooms.

CJHS students build parabolic
dish solar cooker

Ms. Gitlin's and Ms. Bierman's
pre-calculus classes built parabolic marshmallow roasters after completing
units on conic sections. Based on the same technology used for satellite
dishes, the student's roasters all succeed in raising the internal temperatures
of the marshmallows that they roasted. Joseph Waldman and Deanna Levin
designed the model that produced the highest temperature as well as the
greatest change in temperature. Their marshmallow got so hot that it melted
off of the stick. Congratulations to all participants!

Tennis team
competes
The men's tennis team has played five
matches this season against Highland Park, Deerfield, Glenbrook North,
New Trier and Glenbrook South High Schools. The team features
senior Zach Berkman, junior Joe Waldman, sophomores Benji Derman, Avram
Pachter, Jason Wiznitzer, and freshmen Leore Avidar, Aaron Magid and Brian
Pogrund.
The format has been to play an 8-game pro-set
in singles and then the same in doubles, or 2 singles matches.
"The team has done remarkably well for the
little time they have practiced," Tennis coach and Board President
Mr. Flink said. "They adjust to new doubles partners, work hard,
try their best, and do not complain. Probably the best part of the experience
is that the other coaches and parents of our opponents have remarked again
and again how well behaved our players are and what good sportsmen they
have been. Every coach has asked us to play again next year. In addition,
every player on the team has one at least one match."
