Ari Frankel Named A Finalist in National Chemistry Olympiad
CJHS is proud to announce that junior Ari Frankel placed among the top 20 high school chemistry students in the entire United States in the National Chemistry Olympiad, earning him a place at the two-week training camp this summer at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. Ari and the other finalists will undergo an intense program, studying inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry with extensive laboratory work. The top four students will then be selected to represent the United States in the International Chemistry Olympiad, which will be held in July in Russia.
CJHS junior Richard Kahn also competed in the Olympiad Exam, and his outstanding performance earned him an Honors Recommendation (top 51-150 students nationwide). Congratulations to our students and to CJHS Science Department Chair Mrs. Ann Levinson, their gifted AP Chemistry teacher and mentor. | |
Spring Sports Update
The Men's Tennis Team finished its season on Thursday with a very competitive match against North Shore Country Day School. The team played a tough schedule but still managed to complete the season with a very respectable record.
Senior Brian Pogrund came within six inches of a hole-in-one on the ninth hole when the CJHS Golf Team played at the Weber Park golf course in Skokie last Friday. This Friday, the "pink shirts" went to Sports Park Driving Range to work on their long game.
The CJHS Ultimate Frisbee team played its best game ever last Sunday, but lost at the last second, 13-12. The team finishes its regular season this Sunday and will move on to the Ultimate Frisbee playoffs.
The CJHS Soccer Club, inspired by the coaching of Rabbi Ruven Barkan, continues to improve its skills through drill work and scrimmages each week. The girls are hoping to field a team for next fall; interested students should give it a try so that the team can begin interscholastic play.
The Running Club meets each Sunday morning in beautiful Harms Woods to stay in shape for the fall Cross-Country season. The Cross-Country team is already signed up to compete in six invitationals in the fall.
CJHS will celebrate our student athletes and our growing athletic program at the Second Annual Spring Sports Banquet on Wednesday, May 16, from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at Moriah Congregation in Deerfield. The cost for the dessert reception is $5 per person. Email Mr. Tim Cohen, Athletic Director, at tcohen@cjhs.org with any questions or to RSVP.

Softball Fundraiser for Friends of the IDF
Next Sunday, May 13, CJHS, Ida Crown Jewish Academy, and the Fasman Yeshiva High School would like to invite you to the first-ever Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Softball Showdown. Each school will play three games at Lerner Park in West Rogers Park (games at noon, 2:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.).
In addition to softball, the day will include concessions, kosher barbecue, and of course, the kind of fun and competitive atmosphere that occurs when three Jewish high schools from the same area join together to make a communal statement of support for Israel.
All proceeds from the event will go directly to Friends of the IDF, an organization that supports one of the most integral parts of Israeli society, the Israeli army. If you have questions or would like to help sponsor the event, please contact Matthew Silverman at hoopsguy9141@aol.com. |
