CJHS celebrates class of 2004 college acceptances

Congratulations to CJHS' first senior class members who were accepted to numerous universities. Seniors Zach Berkman, Evan Dreifuss, Mollie Flink, Samantha Freeman and Beth Magid applied to a variety of schools across the country with guidance from Director of College Counseling Marybeth Kravets and College Counseling Associate Marissa Lifshen. In addition to factors such as size, location, and curriculum, Jewish life on campus was an important consideration for CJHS students when determining a school's "fit." The following is a list of colleges and Israel programs to which CJHS seniors were accepted this year.

Florence Melton Adult Mini School North American Director joins CJHS Education Committee

CJHS welcomes to the Education Committee Dr. Betsy Dolgin Katz, 15-year North American Director of the Florence Melton Adult Mini School. Dr. Dolgin Katz is an adjunct faculty member of National Lewis University and is on the Board of Directors of the Covenant Foundation. Dr. Dolgin Katz earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Cincinnati.

The Education Committee includes Dr. Michael Fishbane, Dr. Stephen Fisher, Dr. Jane Gard, Rabbi Elliot Goldberg, Rabbi David Soloff, Dr. Roger Stein, Mrs. Roslyn Stein, Rabbi Gerald Teller and is chaired by Mrs. Phyllis Hofman Waldmann.

CJHS commemorates Yom Hashoah

Students and faculty commemorated Yom Hashoah on April 16 with an educational program that featured Holocaust survivor Morris Goldner. Mr. Goldner, whose life story was told in A Match Made in Hell by Larry Stillman, spoke and answered students questions. Following the program, Mr. Goldner and Mr. Stillman met with faculty for a Lunch and Learn program.

Freshmen Ruth Eisenberg, Aaron Magid, Brian Pogrund, Matthew Silverman and Nat Sufrin led tefillah this week. Senior Evan Dreifuss, junior Judah Rubin, sophomore Jason Wiznitzer and freshman Sandy Johnston read Torah. A special yasher koach to Sandy Starkman, the first CJHS parent to read Torah during morning tefillah.

JTS Professor of Jewish Education to teach at JTS-SSDS-CJHS study session

Join the Jewish Theological Seminary, Solomon Schechter Day Schools and CJHS for a luncheon study session with Dr. Jeffrey Kress at noon on April 28, when he presents "Creating Caring Learning Communities: A Social- Emotional Learning Approach to Building Jewish Values." Dr. Kress is Assistant Professor of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Senior Research Associate of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education. His most recent book, coauthored with Drs. Bernard Novick and Maurice Elias, is "Building Learning Communities with Character: How to Integrate Academic, Social and Emotional Learning." The study session will take place at Beth Hillel Congregation, 3220 Big Tree Ln. in Wilmette and is co-chaired by Karen and Jay Kaufman and Sandy Starkman.

Walk with CJHS at the 'Walk with Israel'

JUF will provide busses for CJHS which leaves at 8 a.m. from school to the annual JUF "Israel Solidarity Day" on May 2. Please contact Student Activities Coordinator Mr. Schultz to reserve a space on the bus. CJHS students and staff will receive a T-shirt designed by junior Becky Kupchan to wear at the walk. Community members can purchase the shirt for $5.

Students to volunteer at New City YMCA

Students from CJHS, Loyola Academy, and the Muslim Educational Center will be participating in the National Day of Interfaith Youth Service, coordinated by the Interfaith Youth Core on April 25. Students will be performing infrastructure improvements to the New City YMCA in Chicago, eating lunch, and engaging in dialogue. The service trip is part of CJHS’ standing relationship with the IFYC, Loyola Academy, and the Muslim Educational Center.

CJHS to celebrate Israeli Independence Day

To celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut on April 26, CJHS, in conjunction with the JCRC of Chicago, has invited Israel expert Neil Lazarus to lead a school-wide session on current events in Israel. Following the program, students and staff will enjoy a school-wide picnic outside with games, music and dancing. Bring your quarters and dollars to play games provided by the Va'ad Israel. Part of CJHS' Israel program is underwritten by the Avi Chai foundation.

Lecture presents 'the art of politics'

Mr. Neil Adelman will present the Art and the Politics of Arthur Szyk (pronounced Shick) in the Art Room at 12:30 p.m. on April 27. Mr. Szyk was an illuminator an miniaturist, cartoonist and caricaturist , propagandist for the Allied cause during World War II, Polish patriot and tireless partisan for a Jewish state, antifascist humanist and freedom fighter. He designed and created the famous Szyk Hagaddah and his legacy of art was to address and understand the great issues of his time.

Save the Date: CJHS' first commencement ceremony

Join CJHS at 5 p.m. on June 1 for the school's first commencement ceremony. Seniors Zach Berkman, Evan Dreifuss, Mollie Flink, Samantha Freeman and Beth Magid will be graduating. Tickets will be needed to attend. An invitation will be sent to community members.

Come to the Spring Fine Arts Festival

CJHS is proud to announce its Spring Fine Arts Festival, featuring performances from the CJHS fine arts classes, including the one-act “The Ugly Duckling” by (Winnie the Pooh author) A.A. Milne. The performance is at 1 p.m. on May 23 and is hosted by Congregation Kehillat Shalom at Temple Judea Mitzpah, 8610 Niles Center Road. Tickets are available from Student Activities Coordinator Mr. Schultz .

Register for student government elections

Registration for Va’ad Elections begins on April 28. Interested students should stay tuned to announcements in Tefillah detailing the positions and how to register to run.

CJHS to celebrate National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month. In this spirit, CJHS will celebrate Poetry Day on April 29. To celebrate, CJHS will hold a Poetry Slam during lunch and a Poetry Contest in which students will have to recite various poetry throughout the day for points and candy.
