Bovis to CJHS: Construction on Target for Fall Opening
Dr. Mark Levin, Vice President of CJHS and Chair of the Site Committee, reports that Bovis, the general contractor for the construction of CJHS's new Deerfield campus, has confirmed that the new building will be ready for occupancy as planned for our fall 2007 school year. To ensure an on-time completion, Bovis is using multiple crews inside the building to work on all three floors simultaneously.
If you drive by the new site, you will see that the exterior of the educational wing shell is almost completely done.

Bowling Party for Incoming and Prospective Freshmen
Attention, eighth graders: you are invited to be our guests for bowling, pizza, and fun with current CJHS students at our annual Bowling Party! The party will be held at Wilmette Bowling Alley, 1903 Schiller Avenue in Wilmette, on Wednesday, April 25 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Transportation will be provided from Solomon Schechter, Northbrook, to the bowling alley. (A bus will leave Schechter at 3:45 p.m.) Transportation will also be provided for CJHS students; that bus will leave CJHS at 4:00 p.m. Families are asked to make their own pick-up arrangements.

Yom HaShoah Observed at CJHS
CJHS observed Yom HaShoah on Monday, April 16, honoring those who perished during the Holocaust. Immediately following tefillah, seniors Abby Landis, Matthew Silverman, Brian Pogrund, Lindsay Seidenberg, Hannah Berkowicz, Eli Miller, and Leore Avidar shared their experiences in Poland last summer. Yasher koach to Brian, who created an audio-visual component for the ceremony.
During first and second periods, students in some Judaic Studies and History classes heard from Mrs. Barbara Steiner, a fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and a survivor of Majdanek. Yasher koach to senior Ruthie Eisenberg for making the arrangements for Mrs. Steiner to speak at CJHS.
Yasher Koach as well to Mrs. Yaffa Lahat, Hebrew teacher, for creating a breathtaking and somber memorial at the entrance of the school, complete with six yellow candles and six flowers representing the six million Jews who perished.

Students Plan Darfur Sleep-In
Never Again? Turn Words into Action! Stop the Violence in Darfur!On Saturday night, April 21, Jewish World Watch and Va'ad Tikkun Olam held a Sleep-In for Darfur, protesting the inaction of our government in stopping the Genocide in Darfur.
The all-night program included a drumming circle, guest speakers, a screening of Hotel Rwanda, a dance party, signing petitions, writing letters, making phone calls, and much more. Check out next week's e-news for a full report on this tremendously successful event! |

From the Athletic Director
The spring sports season is underway at CJHS, with more than 60 student-athletes participating in a record number of sports.
The Men's Tennis Team had its first match of the season against Glenbrook North in very chilly weather. Next week, the team faces Niles West, Highland Park, and Lake Forest Academy.
The Coed Ultimate Frisbee Team, already halfway through its season, will face Ida Crown this Sunday. The team is playing at a high level and this promises to be a great game.
The Running Club has been meeting every Sunday morning this spring at beautiful Harms Woods Forest Preserve and is training to run the Walk With Israel on May 6.
On Wednesday, the Soccer Club began its spring season by participating in drills, scrimmaging, and conditioning. The team has scrimmages planned for later in the season.
Finally, the pink-shirted Golf Team began its first of several Friday afternoon outings at the Weber Park golf course. |

Annual Exhibit at Great Frame Up
Mrs. Marla Snyder's Studio Art and Photography students will showcase their artwork at The Great Frame Up on Wednesday, May 2, with an opening reception from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Students' framed artwork will be displayed for a week in the store, which is located in the retail complex on the southeast corner of Golf Road and Washington St. The show is juried by local artists, and awards will be given at the reception.

Yom HaAtzmaut Preparation in Place
(Leave Your Lunch at Home on Tuesday!)
The Yom HaAtzmaut Committee is gearing up for an incredible celebration on Tuesday, April 24 at CJHS. Following tefillah on Tuesday, please join us as we welcome Barukh Binah, Israeli Consul General to the Midwest and proud CJHS parent. Consul General Binah will speak with us about the current state of Israel. This is the second year the Consul General has spent Yom HaAtzmaut with CJHS, and we welcome this new tradition. Students on the Yom HaAtzmaut committee are also working on the finishing touches for an Israel-themed carnival for their peers. The carnival will include Israeli dancing, a number of fun and educational booths, a costume contest, and lunch from Taboun Grill. Lunch is being sponsored by the JCRC/Hillel Israel Initiative and JNF's Caravan For Democracy, in cooperation with Shorashim's Club Israel.

Save the Date!
The annual CJHS Spring Athletics Banquet will be held on Wednesday, May 16 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at Moriah Congregation in Deerfield. This anticipated event recognizes the accomplishments of our student-athletes and is open to all CJHS athletic team participants from all seasons, family members, and friends. The Sports Banquet includes a keynote speaker, multi-media presentation of the year's athletic highlights, special student recognition awards, and a delicious dessert reception. Tickets are $5 per person. Invitations will be mailed shortly.

Junior Passes Major Music Examination
The staff and administration of CJHS congratulate Seth Berkman for successfully passing the 2007 Illinois State Achievement in Music Examination for Level 10. The Illinois Achievement in Music Program covers twelve levels of testing. The examinations are conducted in two parts: a theory and sight-reading test, followed by a technique and performance examination. The required repertoire covers music from two different periods.

Walk With Israel
Join CJHS students, faculty, parents, and community members as we walk together on Israel Solidarity Day. This year, we are pleased to join our Deerfield neighbors in the North Suburban Walk. Students Prepare to Bike the Drive
The CJHS Bike Club is gearing up for their biggest ride of the year. Every Memorial Day, the City of Chicago closes Lake Shore Drive to accommodate over 18,000 riders in Bike the Drive. Whether you want to ride 15 miles or 30 miles, you can join in this exciting event with CJHS students, parents, and faculty. The entrance fee is $35, and the Bike Club will also raise money for tzedakah through the event. If you are interested in participating, please contact Esther Lowe or Dr. Auslander. |

Save Three Lives--Donate Blood!
The Va'ad is proud to announce that CJHS will host its first blood drive. Each pint of blood that is donated is capable of saving three people's lives. Please take part in this huge mitzvah!
The blood drive will take place on Wednesday, May 2 at school. Donors must be at least 16 years old by May 1 and weigh more than 110 pounds. Students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of CJHS are all welcome to take part in this blood drive. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Braun, Va'ad Secretary.

Students and Faculty Stand in Solidarity with Virginia Tech

CJHS students, faculty, and staff were proud to wear orange and maroon on Friday, showing Hokie Hope and standing in solidarity with members of the Virginia Tech community. Virginia Tech family members across the country united to declare Friday, April 20, an "Orange and Maroon Effect" day to honor those killed in the tragic events on the campus Monday, and to show support for Virginia Tech students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and friends. "Orange and Maroon Effect" was born several years ago as an invitation to Tech fans to wear orange and maroon to Virginia Tech athletic events. |

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jeff Pomeranz, husband of Ellen Blumenthal, Tanach teacher at Solomon Schechter Middle School. The funeral was on Monday.

Keynote Address by Rabbi Elliot Dorff to Highlight CJE Program on Jewish Ethics
Council for Jewish Elderly is hosting a half-day conference, "Judaism and Ethics Today: Teachings for Our Everyday Lives," on Sunday, April 29, at the Lieberman Geriatric Health Centre, 9700 Gross Point Road, Skokie. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
In addition to Rabbi Dorff's presentation, "Matters of Life & Death: Jewish and American Approaches to Medical Ethics," the morning will feature interactive class sessions covering environmental ethics, business ethics, and the ethics of aging.
The program is free of charge and open to the community. A kosher lunch will be available for purchase. Lunch will be free of charge for students. Space is limited! Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to 773.508.1073 or to e-mail jli@cje.net.

Rock AtzmautKfar Jewish Arts Center proudly presents Rock Atzmaut, an all-ages Indie Rock event celebrating Israeli Independence, featuring Heedoosh.
