Donor pledges $500,000
to CJHS
An anonymous donor has made a commitment
of one-half million dollars to CJHS over a period of five years. The gift
is being made in recognition of the CJHS' new plans and vision for the
future. With this gift, this friend hopes to inspire other members of
the community to make similar commitments to CJHS.
"We are overwhelmed and thrilled
by the news and express our deepest appreciation to this generous donor,"
said Development Consultant Michael Rubin.
Istanbul Jewish Community
thanks CJHS for its letters
After the November 15 bombings
of two Turkish synagogues, CJHS juniors in Rabbi Dickman's Bible classes
wrote letters of support to the Chief Rabbinate of Turkey. Recently, the
students received a thank you letter from Robert Filiba, Education Coordinator
at the Ulus Jewish Day School of Istanbul.
"This feeling of solidarity
in times of need is what makes Jews living in different parts of the world
so united and we are thankful for our traditions that keep this fire alive
within us," wrote Mr. Filiba.
The Ulus Jewish High School has
about 400 student enrolled in grades K-12. Students learn Jewish traditions
and English in addition to the standard Turkish curriculum.
CJHS students and faculty
celebrate Shabbat together
After a busy week of school, the
2004 CJHS Spring Shabbaton kicked off on March 26 with a Hachanah L’Shabbat
at CJHS with an improvised “prayer poem” led by English teacher Ms. Dickman
and a story from Rabbi Barkan. Students then boarded buses for their host
families in West Rogers Park. The school davened with the Egalitarian
Minyan and Congregation Ner Tamid for Kabbalat Shabbat, and students shared
dinners with families throughout the neighborhood. Saturday, students
davened with the Egalitarian Minyan, shared kiddush and lunch, participated
in an hour of Va’ad activities, and then spent the afternoon at Indian
Boundary Park, enjoying the beautiful spring weather.
That evening, following Mincha,
Seudah Shlesheit and Havdalah, students boarded buses for ComedySportz
in Chicago, where everyone enjoyed a hilarious evening of Chicago-style
improv comedy. Special thanks to David Bardach and Linda Forst of the
Egalitarian Minyan and Victor Drower of Congregation Ner Tamid.
The CJHS Shabbaton couldn't have
happened without the participation of numerous students and faculty. Thank
you to the following people for their role in planning an awesome Shabbaton

CJHS takes seventh and eighth graders
bowling
The CJHS Class of 2006 and 2007 (our sophomores and freshmen)
sponsored a bowling party for incoming students at Wilmette Bowling Center
on March 29.
While bowling on teams, students had the opportunity to
socialize and to learn about life as a CJHS student. Of course, no Jewish
event is complete without food. The event included 10 large pizzas, 8
2-litter bottles of soda pop, 5 large bags of chips and pretzels, 4 dozen
doughnuts, 3 mega-size bags of Twizzlers, and 5 pounds of grapes. Special
thank you to CJHS parents, Deborah Landis, Michelle Seidenberg and Jennifer
Flink, for coordinating the event.
Prospective students
take placement exams
Hebrew and Math Placement Exams were held
at Solomon Schechter Middle School on March 30. In order to guarantee
that students receive the best possible education, CJHS administers math
and Hebrew placement examinations to all incoming freshmen.
