College Night for CJHS Sophomores and Juniors Niles West High School will be hosting their annual college night on Wednesday, April 5 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on their high school campus. More than 200 colleges and universities will be represented. CJHS students and parents are encouraged to attend this program as part of the college planning process. Students from other high schools from around the area will also be attending, so you may wish to arrive early to secure parking. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact Mr. Scher.
CJHS Hosts Martial Arts Demonstration As part of our physical education and wellness program, CJHS hosted a martial arts demonstration this past Thursday for all students during the lunch period. The program was presented by the Filipino-Kali-Escrima Academy of Chicago.
Our students just completed a two-week ice skating program as part of their P.E. curriculum, and on Monday, they will begin a three-week judo program. CJHS has a strong commitment to offering its student body a diverse program that exposes the students to many different athletic opportunities.
Special Chamber Ensemble Performance On Thursday, April 6, the Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Arnie Sklar, will give a special performance during the lunch period. This is part of our Lunch and Arts program. Last week, members of the drama class performed scenes and songs from Wicked. CJHS is proud to offer these programs to our student body and faculty.
CJHS Joins Million Voices for Darfur Campaign The Va'ad Tikkun Olam encourages you to join the Million Voices for Darfur Campaign. This campaign intends to present one million electronic and physical postcards to our nation's leaders at the Darfur rally on April 30 in Washington D. C. To send a prewritten electronic postcard, go to the website linked below. After you send the postcard, the site will let you send email to your friends and family, asking them to join the campaign as well.
We ask that you send this automatic email not only to your friends, but also to savedarfur@cjhs.org. This way, the Va'ad Tikkun Olam can keep track of how many postcards our community has sent. This will help us mobilize for action on behalf of Darfur, including the rally. Also, when you are at CJHS, please sign a paper postcard. These postcards are in an envelope on the podium in front of the whiteboard used for announcements. When you enter the school building, the whiteboard is just to your left. Click here to send an electronic postcard. Got Summer? Can you believe that summer is almost here? What are you going to do this summer? If you don't already have plans, see Ms. Marcus in the College Counseling office, or email her at smarcus@cjhs.org. She can give you some great ideas.
Summer Engineering Program The University of Illinois sponsors the WYSE (Worldwide Youth In Science and Engineering) program for interested students. Participants are exposed to different fields of engineering in a friendly environment at the Urbana campus. This is an excellent program and very highly recommended. Please visit the web site listed for more information and/or feel free to contact Science Department Chair Ann Levinson, alevinson@cjhs.org. Not sure if your interest is in engineering? This program will help you decide. If you graduate in 2007 or 2008, you can register for either Session I held from June 11-17, 2006 or for Session II held from July 9-15, 2006. If you graduate in 2009, you can register for the session held from July 23-29, 2006. Applications are due by April 15. Click here for WYSE information. Another Summer Engineering Program Michigan State University in East Lansing is sponsoring a similar program from July 16-21, 2006. Applications are due by May 30. Click here for MSU link. Students Collect Pennies The Va'ad Tikkun Olam is raising awareness about the number of disenfranchised people in Chicago by collecting pennies representing the number of people who experience homelessness at some point in the year in the Chicagoland area. The money will be donated the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. Click here to learn more about homelessness in Chicago. Maot Chittim CJHS students will help pack boxes at Maot Chittim on Monday, April 3. Please speak to Sofi Petchersky if you are interested in attending.
Soft Target Awareness Course Inez Altman, Executive Director, and Martha Keefe, Administrative Assistant, attended a security training session on March 29. The session was hosted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI and was held at McCormick Place. Representatives from other public and private schools from the Chicagoland area were also in attendance. Information was shared and contacts were made in order to provide support and feedback in the future.
Several of the viable strategies presented will be implemented at CJHS to further enhance the security measures already in place. Our goal is to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty and staff.
