Questions about the Construction of our New Deerfield Campus

Dear Jack Hammer: The construction of the Deerfield campus looks great. Tell me about recent progress.

Jack Hammer:  Thanks to the great weather, we made a lot of progress this week. We raised the three beams signed by students and alumni (see story on right), which will be visible in the gymnasium.

The concrete floor has been poured on all three floors of the educational wing, and the mechanical and fire sprinkler fitters have begun work on those floors.

The carpentry frame crews have begun framing the first floor north wall and will be working the exterior framing of the building soon.

If you drive by the site at night, you can see the construction lights present on the first and second floors-soon, the third floor, too!

Email your construction questions to jackhammer@cjhs.org.

Students and Alumni Make Their Mark on Our New Building
beam

This week, CJHS students and alumni had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sign three of the I-beams from the school's new building. The beams were delivered by K & K Steel to CJHS's current home in Morton Grove.  Once there, students signed their names in Hebrew and English directly onto the beams. Afterward, the beams were transported back to the Deerfield site, where they were raised to their permanent location on the ceiling of the school's future gymnasium. As you can see from the photo, the signature side of each beam will be displayed for everyone to see while they are in the gymnasium.

Thank you to Jim Blowers, construction superintendent for Bovis and to Gary Brown for helping with these arrangements. Special thanks to Jennifer Flink, Danny Kahn, Mark Levin, Ellen Rostker, Bruce Scher, Sharon Chefitz, and Tami Warshawsky, who helped with this project.

Don't worry, CJHS alumni! You, too, will have an opportunity to sign the beams later this summer. More information will follow.

Venture Into the Woods...

"Once upon a time, in a far-off kingdom, lived a fair maiden, a sad young lad, and a childless baker with his wife."

After weeks of rehearsals and preparations, the Fine and Performing Arts Department is pleased to invite the Chicago community to Into the Woods, a musical by Stephen Sondheim. Learn how Cinderella, a pre-beanstalk Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and the Big Bad Wolf are all interconnected when you go Into the Woods on Sunday, March 25 and Monday, March 26 at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, 1175 Sheridan Road in Highland Park.

The curtain will rise at 7:30 p.m. The show is under the capable leadership of Ms. Dori Robinson, Director; Mrs. Gail Gottlieb, Musical Director; Hillary Weiss, Assistant Director; and Richard Kahn, Assistant Musical Director.

The CJHS jazz band, under the direction of Mr. Chris Forte, will play an opening act before the show begins. Guests are asked to arrive by 7:00 p.m. to enjoy this performance.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Two CJHS Students Qualify to Take National Chemistry Olympiad Exam

Last week, 35 top AP Chemistry students from throughout metropolitan Chicago took the Chicago Section, American Chemistry Society's Local Chemistry Olympiad Exam. This exam determines which students will take the United States National Chemistry Olympiad Exam and compete for positions on the U.S. Team in the International Chemistry Olympiad competition.

CJHS juniors Ari Frankel and Richard Kahn, who were nominated by their AP Chemistry teacher, Mrs. Ann Levinson, were among the students taking the local exam. CJHS is pleased to announce that both Ari and Richard were among the 17 highest-performing students on the local exam, qualifying them to take the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam next month. The exam will be given on Friday, April 27 at Loyola University. The exam takes all day and includes a multiple-choice section, a free response section, and a laboratory practical.

No more than two students per area high school could be nominated to take the local exam. We are proud that CJHS is one of only five schools in the metropolitan area that saw both of their nominees advance to the national level. "This is a true testament to the breadth and depth of the academic program at CJHS," says Dr. Ted Schaffner, Interim Head of School.

Record Number of Spring Sports Underway

This spring, more than half of the student body is active in one of our five athletic teams for this season:

Tennis professional Kamal Anbar returns to coach the CJHS Men's Tennis Team. The ten players have been practicing for several weeks and look forward to an exciting 10-game season.

The 15-member Coed Ultimate Frisbee Team is participating for the first time in the Chicago Ultimate Junior Organization (CUJO), a 16-team high school league. The team began its season last Sunday in the pre-tournament with games against Evanston Township High School and Lincoln Park High School and has a re-match against Lincoln Park this Sunday.

Cross-country coach Bob Cogan returns to lead the CJHS Coed Running Club.  Club members will run each Sunday in beautiful Harms Woods Forest Preserve and will run as a team in the May 6 Walk With Israel.

The Coed Soccer Club, with 17 members, will focus on skills development and team play. With 15 women participating, the team will scrimmage against other women's high school teams in preparation for competitive play in the fall.

CJHS is also pleased to introduce a Men's Golf Team.  The eight-member team will play weekly, with interscholastic team competitions scheduled for the fall.

Good luck to all the CJHS athletes this spring!

Students Take Hebrew Research Exam

CJHS students participated in the Szold Institute Research Study this week, which is designed to evaluate the school's Hebrew curriculum. All students took a listening, reading comprehension, or writing exam.

"Many thanks to everyone who helped with the logistics of giving different exams to the entire school," says Sra. Claudia Linda, Modern Language Department Chair. "I want to extend a special thank you to our students, who all arrived with a seriousness of purpose prepared to do their best on an evaluation not related to a class or a grade."

Va'ad Plans a Blood Drive

The Va'ad is proud to announce that CJHS will host its first blood drive. Each pint of blood that is donated is capable of saving three people's lives. Please take part in this huge mitzvah!

The blood drive will take place on Wednesday, May 2 at school. Donors must be at least 16 years old by May 1 and weigh more than 110 pounds. Students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of CJHS are all welcome to take part in this blood drive. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Braun, Va'ad Secretary.

Students Learn to Lobby
Aliza Sinkinson, AIPAC's Early Engagement Coordinator, came to CJHS on Monday to teach students important lobbying skills. The session focused on strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship and finding ways to increase the economic sanctions against Iran. Thank you to senior Aaron Magid for planning this program. If enough students are interested, Va'ad Israel will organize a group to lobby a member of Congress in Chicago. For more information, please speak to Aaron.

Additional Chemistry Resource for Students

CJHS chemistry teacher Ron Urick recently attended a chemistry conference at the University of Illinois in Urbana. According to Mr. Urick, the presentation by Mr. Jeff Christopherson of Normal Community High School was particularly valuable. During the presentation, Christopherson demonstrated an interactive website that he is creating for chemistry students and instructors. The site, www.unit5.org/chemistry, offers numerous slideshows, demonstrations, resource materials, laboratory explorations, and problem-solving exercises. Mr. Urick suggests that all chemistry students at CJHS visit the site.

P.O. Sells Roses for Mothers' Day

The CJHS Parent Organization is selling roses grown on Moshav Sde Nitzan in the Negev. The roses are $18.00 per dozen (mixed color bouquets) and will be available for pickup at CJHS on Friday, May 11 between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. By participating in this fundraiser, you will be patronizing an Israeli company and supporting the CJHS Scholarship Fund.
