Ask Jack Hammer

Dear Jack Hammer:
How has the cold weather affected the pace of construction?
Jack Hammer:
The cold weather did cause a delay in the placement of the steel beams. However, according to Bovis Lend Lease, our general contractor, additional crews will be working simultaneously to make sure the project is completed on schedule for the 2007-2008 academic year.
Email your construction questions to jackhammer@cjhs.org to be answered in a future Ask Jack Hammer.

30+ Families Attend Curriculum and Beyond Program
It was standing room only on Wednesday evening as prospective students and their parents packed into CJHS to hear from administrators and department chairs about the school's mission and core values, the integrated general studies and Judaic studies curriculum, the success of CJHS graduates, the new Deerfield campus, and the many opportunities available to CJHS students in athletics, the fine arts, and more. The department chairs, several of whom came out of retirement after long, successful careers at North Shore public high schools, also shared some of the reasons why they were attracted to CJHS - including the vibrant community, the collegial relationship among the faculty, the vibrant student body, and their commitment to CJHS's mission. Following the presentation, parents participated in an informative question and answer session while students had an opportunity to learn more about the school from CJHS student ambassadors. At the end of the evening, parents left with packets of information about CJHS academics and activities, and students received the newest CJHS sweatshirts.
"Curriculum and Beyond was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the breadth of our curriculum, the expertise of our faculty, and our vibrant school life," says Ms. Rachel Spiro, Director of Admissions. "We thank our terrific recruitment committee for their help and support in making this event so successful." |

Art Students To Make Tallitot for CJHS Guests
In the coming weeks, Mrs. Marla Snyder's Studio Art class will batik tallitot to be used by CJHS guests. Students will work in groups to design and create these traditional four-corner garments. Rabbi Fryer will speak to the students regarding the history of the tallit and the proper way to tie the strings of the tzitzit. Batiking is an ancient process using wax and dye to create unique fabric designs. The students will learn a simplified version using melted crayons and dye.
Mrs. Snyder is looking for old, broken crayons that can be donated to the school for this project. Please send any crayons you no longer need (they must be Crayola brand, as they melt best) to school in a ziploc bag labeled with Mrs. Snyder's name. |

Students Announce Hunger Banquet
Celebrate Purim with a Va'ad/Va'ad Tikkun Olam-sponsored Hunger Banquet. Spend time with friends while fulfilling the mitzvah of matanot l'evyonim (gifts to the poor). The Hunger Banquet will take place on Purim, Sunday, March 4, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jessica Rosenberg's home. Please bring a minimum donation of $5; 100% of your donation will go directly to Mazon. Please RSVP to Rachel Braun by February 26 or simply respond to the evite.
A Hunger Banquet is a unique opportunity for students to put themselves in someone else's shoes and learn about the lives of millions of hungry people around the world, while at the same time raising money to help people in need. Upon arrival, each person is randomly assigned a role in a social class and served a meal according to their class. During the meal, everyone will learn about the realities of living in each of these social classes. |

Sweatshirts are Here!
The Va'ad is pleased to announce that the brand-new CJHS sweatshirts have arrived. If you have not picked up your order, stop by Ms. Musin's desk.

Order Challah from the Va'ad
Do you eat challah on Shabbat? Do you enjoy baked goods like pumpkin chocolate chip bread, oatmeal raisin cookies, and fudge brownies? Would you like to help support the Va'ad and make social events less expensive?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, consider ordering Breadsmith baked goods from the CJHS Va'ad HaStudentim. Ordering Breadsmith products through the Va'ad costs the same as buying directly from Breadsmith, and it saves you a trip to the bakery. The Va'ad receives a portion of the profit, which helps to support the cost of social programming for students.
Ordering challah is quick and easy. Simply complete an order form and place in Geoff Levin's box or e-mail your order to geoff847@juno.com before lunch on Wednesday on any week. The baked goods will be distributed on Friday morning at school. Baked goods include various types of challah, breads, and desserts. All baked goods are certified kosher pareve and freshly baked at Breadsmith of Skokie on the morning of delivery. |
