CJHS E-News: Class of 2010 On Its Way!

  February 17, 2006 / 19 Shevat 5766

Shabbat Shalom,

Rachel Spiro, Director of Admissions, is thrilled to report that CJHS recently sent out its first round of acceptance letters for the Class of 2010! According to Spiro, there is already an 80% increase in the number of acceptances compared to last year at this time. This first round of acceptances benefited from the $500 tuition credit that families received by applying by the Early Decision Deadline. The acceptances suggest a diverse student body, which includes students from nine communities and twelve different synagogues throughout Chicago.

Placement Exams for Incoming Freshmen

In order to guarantee that students are placed in appropriate classes, CJHS administers a math placement examination to all incoming freshmen. This year, the placement exam will be given at Solomon Schechter Day School in Northbrook on Tuesday, February 28. Testing will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude around 11:00 a.m. Children attending SSDS will be excused from class to take the exam. Incoming students from other day schools or public schools are welcome to take the exam at SSDS or may request to schedule testing at CJHS at a separate date.

Please register for these exams by contacting Rachel Spiro, Director of Admissions (847-324-3706 or rspiro@chicagojhs.com). Only students who have been accepted or who have applied for admission are permitted to take the exam.

Rolling Admissions Continue

If you know of families with a graduating middle school student who have yet to submit an application for the 2006-2007 school year, please let them know that there is still time. Also, CJHS continues to receive applications from current high school students who are planning to transfer into CJHS. Students interested in transferring are invited to shadow a CJHS student. Contact Ms. Spiro to schedule a visit or receive more information at 847-324-3706 or rspiro@chicagojhs.com.

From the Athletic Director's Desk

The men's basketball team moved to a remarkable 13-6 record with its 53-35 win over Roycemore this week. Halftime featured a premier performance by our very own CJHS Dance Team. Led by high scoring juniors Brian Pogrund and Matthew Silverman, the men's basketball team has two games left in its season. The Tigers will host Universal on Wednesday, February 22 at 5:00 p.m. at the Mayer Kaplan JCC and will play Ida Crown Jewish Academy on Tuesday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Northbrook YMCA.

The women's basketball team celebrated its winning season Thursday with a team dinner at the home of Rachel Binstock and by attending a Northwestern University women's basketball game in Evanston. We want to thank Coach Davis for his expert leadership, parents and the school community for all of your support, and especially the team members for all of their time, effort, and enthusiasm. What a great season!

There is still time to sign up for spring sports. The men's tennis team has an exciting schedule with opponents including New Trier, Highland Park, Glenbrook North, and North Shore Country Day School. There is great enthusiasm for the inaugural year for Ultimate Frisbee. This is a coed team sport, and we are still looking for more women to join. Ultimate Frisbee is tremendous fun and great exercise.

College Counseling: From Admissions to Enrollment

By this point in the school year, many of our seniors have been admitted to several colleges and are weighing their options. To help them make informed decisions, the CJHS College Counseling office sends each student an email with basic information about Jewish life on the campuses he or she is considering. For each institution, we provide information about the Jewish population, the campus Hillel, the availability of kosher food, the religious and social life, and the range of Jewish studies. We also provide direct links to the websites of Hillel houses on each campus.

Va'ad Tikkun Olam Sponsors Cell Phone and Toiletries Drives

There is one week to go for the two current Va'ad Tikkun Olam drives:
Cell phones are being collected for Shalva, an organization that increases awareness of domestic abuse in the Jewish community, provides services for Jewish families experiencing abuse, and plans prevention programs that will help to build a community free of abuse. You can contact Shalva at 773-583-4673 or shalvachgo@aol.com. If you have questions about the cell phone drive, please contact freshman Rachel Binstock or Rabbi Barkan (rabbibarkan@chicagojhs.com).

Unused toiletries will be collected and donated to the Lincoln Park Community Shelter in Chicago, whose mission is to empower homeless individuals to make life changes. By collecting and donating toiletries, we will contribute to the effort to break the cycle of homelessness in Chicago. Learn more about the Lincoln Park Community Shelter at its website, www.lpcsonline.org. If you have questions about the toiletries drive, please contact freshman Nicole Wiznitzer or Rabbi Barkan.

As outlined in the materials, March 24 is the deadline for submitting registration forms, along with the exam fee of $82 per exam, made payable to CJHS.
