CJHS E-News: CJHS Receives Largest Challenge Grant

 February 10, 2006 / 12 Shevat 5766

Shabbat Shalom,

CJHS is thrilled to announce a $2.5 million challenge gift from the Harvey L. Miller Family Foundation. This commitment is to encourage major gifts to the CJHS Endowment Fund, which provides resources for scholarship, programming, and the ability to finance the construction of a new building. The challenge will match all gifts to the CJHS Endowment Fund of $100,000 or more, to a total of $2.5 million during the period between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006.

"CJHS is a success in every meaning of the word," says Harvey L. Miller, who has supported the school since its inception in 2001. "It has earned full accreditation from the state of Illinois as an exemplary college preparatory high school. It is recognized in the Jewish community as a bona fide center for Jewish education. Its first graduates have been accepted at the finest colleges. CJHS is here to stay and is worthy of the support of all those who value superior education in a Jewish setting."

This challenge grant comes at a very exciting time for CJHS. Enrollment, curriculum and programming are growing rapidly. Momentum is building as CJHS prepares to break ground this spring on a 7.3-acre block of land in Deerfield. Plans call for the building to be completed in time for an opening in September 2007.

CJHS is deeply grateful to the Harvey L. Miller Family Foundation for its generosity. If you are considering a gift to the school in response to the challenge, please contact the Development Office at 847-324-3722 or email Development Consultant Sheldon Moss at smoss@chicagojhs.com.

Roslyn Stein to be Honored at Community-wide Celebration

On May 18, 2006, the Chicago community is cordially invited to attend a very special event to celebrate the dramatic growth and success of CJHS. The event, "Building on Success," is being chaired by Harvey L. Miller, and will be held at the Kohl Children's Museum in Glenview. Oly Avidar and Shuli Binah are co-chairs.

During the evening, CJHS will honor Roslyn Stein, who has been Head of School since 1999, even prior to the school's 2001 inception. The success of CJHS is largely due to Roz's vision and extraordinary leadership. Roz is leaving in June to return to the East Coast and the next phase of her professional career.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this important event. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sheldon Moss, CJHS Development Consultant, at 847-324-3722.

Senior Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

The CJHS community congratulates senior Yael Kiken on her most recent academic accomplishment. Yael has been named a finalist in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program. From the Athletic Director's Desk

Mazal tov to the women's basketball team for its first-ever win over Ida Crown Jewish Academy on Wednesday evening. In front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at the Mayer Kaplan JCC, the team won in a hard-fought contest with a final score of 34-30. Senior Shayna Flink, who scored the game-high 10 points, said, "I am really proud of the team. Four years ago, I never thought that CJHS would have a women's basketball team that played at such a high level." The team's last game was a win Thursday night at Cristo Rey, ending the season with an 8-7 record.

After a tough loss against Yeshiva on Sunday, the men's basketball team defeated Waldorf on Wednesday with a final score of 43-36. Junior Brian Pogrund led the team with 18 points, while sophomore Michael Brunwasser was a key contributor. Their next game will be against Roycemore on Wednesday, February 15, at 5:30 p.m. at the Mayer Kaplan JCC. The CJHS dance team will perform at halftime--with a new routine!

Though the weather is still cold, we are already thinking spring sports at CJHS. Registration has begun for both men's tennis and a new entry, coed ultimate frisbee. Competition will begin after Passover.
