CJHS
Recruiting Event: Pioneer Night
More than 100 particpants braved
the cold to attend CJHS' fourth annual Pioneer Night on Jan. 29. The evening
featured Jewish high school graduates who now attend prestigious universities.
Princeton juniors Minda Aarons and Dena Roth attended the Solomon Schecther
High School in New York and were students of Mrs. Stein. Saul Zaritt attended
the Boston Community High School and now is a senior at the University
of Chicago.
The college students spoke about
how their Jewish high school experiences prepared them for the demands
of university life academically. They also detailed how high school influenced
their commitment to living a Jewish life. Va'ad
president senior Mollie Flink described how her experiences at CJHS have
prepared her to begin college in the fall.
Thank you to CJHS parent and event chair Oly Avidar for
all of her hard work and to the recruitment committee chaired by CJHS
parent Jennifer Flink. Yasher Koach to Director of Admissions Rachel Spiro
for helping to organize a great night.
Pioneer night came at an exciting
time for CJHS as the first batch of acceptance letters for the class of
2008 was sent this week.

Students
volunteer on Martin Luther King Day
CJHS junior Becky Kupchan and Ari
Gore participated in the first city wide interfaith day of service sponsored
by the Interfaith Youth Core in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday
on Jan. 18.
More than two hundred students, including students from CJHS' partner
schools -- Loyola Academy and Muslim Educational Center -- gathered at
Loyola University to initiate the program. Then the students split into
groups that went to five different sites in the city to do service projects:
Bosnian Herzogovinian American Community Center, Centro Romero, Interfaith
Refugee and immigration Ministries, South East Asian Center, and the Vietnamese
Association of Illinois. The students returned to Loyola University, and
the program ended with inspiring speeches.
"Our students will continue to do smaller scale service projects
with our partner schools throughout the semester culminating with the
participation in a National Day of Service sponsored by the Council of
World Religions," said Rabbi in Residence Rabbi Barkan. "Throughout
the process, students from the different faiths will reflect together
on the common value of community service in their traditions."
Students whoa re interested in
participating this summer in the interfaith yuth camp, "Face to Face-Faith
to Faith" should contact Rabbi
Barkan or Mr. Schultz.
