State recognized CJHS seniors
CJHS is proud to announce that 10 members of its
senior class have been named 2005 State Scholars by the Illinois
Student Assistance Commission. The State Scholar program recognizes
Illinois high school students for outstanding academic achievement.
CJHS congratulates Zachary Frankel, Jonathan Freed,
Charlie Gandelman, Rachel Hilker, Corey Hipps, Jacob Kanter, Shlomi
Mir, Judah Rubin, Joseph Waldman and Rachel Weiner.
"As a high school, we recognize the outstanding
accomplishments of all of our seniors. The contributions that they
have made to our school and to our community are indicative of the
fine, well-rounded students and citizens they are and we are proud
to have them as part of our student body," says Bruce Scher, Academic
Dean.
Students ranking in the top ten percent of the state's
137,000 high school graduating seniors have been named State Scholars.
Selection is based on SAT 1 and/or ACT test score or the students'
class rank at the end of the junior year.
"Members of this pioneer class of CJHS have made
us very proud of not only their academic and social accomplishments,
but of their commitment to Tikkum Olam, of helping to make this
world a better place for all of us to live," said Head of School
Mrs. Stein. "We are grateful for the work they have done in
our community and for the work they will continue to do when they
leave CJHS."
CJHS applauds our State Scholars and all of our
students on their commitment to learning, to their religion, and
to their families and friends. May we continue to go from strength
to strength as one community.

Seniors on the Move
CJHS seniors were busy completing college applications,
visiting campuses, interviewing, and writing essays this fall. This
was both an exciting and an anxious time for seniors and their parents.
Nevertheless, it was exciting to see the vast array of schools that
seniors had chosen to apply to and to begin to see the results of
all their efforts. Students have applied to colleges across the country
taking the time to apply to schools that will match their academic,
social, and religious needs. While this list is by no means complete,
here is a brief view of schools to which our students have applied:
List College of Jewish Studies, University of Arizona, Art Institute
of Boston, Barnard , Binghamton , Boston University, Bradley, Brandeis,
Case Western, University of Chicago, DePaul, Emerson, George Washington,
University of Illinois at Chicago and Urbana, Indiana, Iowa State,
University of Iowa, Kansas, Knox, Lehigh, Maryland, McGill, University
of Miami, Michigan State, Michigan Technological University, University
of Michigan, Midreshet Lindenbaum, University of Minnesota, University
of Missouri at Colombia, New York University, Northeastern University
in Boston, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn, Pittsburgh, Rutgers,
Tufts, Tulane, Washington University, University of Wisconsin, Wittenburg,
and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
"This list represents the diversity of the Class of 2005. Students
and parents are to be congratulated for the hard work and effort that
has gone into all the college applications this year," said Director
of College Counseling Bruce Scher. |

PSAT Scores Arrive at CJHS
The PSAT/NMSQT scores for the 2004 test arrived
just before winter break. While many sophomores and juniors who
took the test discussed their scores with Bruce Scher, Director
of College Counseling, Scher is in the process of preparing a letter
to accompany all test results and they will be mailed home within
the next two weeks.
"Parents are encouraged to review the scores with
their son/daughter since they are an important part of the student's
academic profile and are useful in predicating future performance
on the SAT and ACT," says Scher.
THE PSAT/NMSQT is offered by over 20,000 high school
throughout the country. Nearly all students who take the test indicate
that they will be attending college. To help students learn from
the test as well as prepare for the SAT, a special website has been
designed by College Board. It provides answers and explanations
for ALL questions on the 2004 PSAT, answers and explanations for
the higher-level math questions included on the back of the PSAT/NMSQT
Score Report, and student-written sample essays for the new SAT
practice essay question printed on the back of the PSAT/NMSQT Score
Report. Scher encourages students and parents to visit this website
at collegeboard.com/psatextra.

CJHS students chosen for prestigious Israel
program
Congratulations to juniors Jacob Shapiro and Ron Gejman
who have been selected to participate in the Write on for Israel Program
2004-2005. Selections were made based on their application, personal references,
two writing samples, academic transcript, and personal interview. Write
on for Israel is co-sponsored by JUF News and the Community Foundation
for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago. It is open to only 30 exceptional
juniors, from public and Jewish high schools, who love Israel, write and
speak well, and can commit to a 2-year extracurricular program in Israel
and advocacy, and who are ready for an extraordinary trip to Israel that
goes beyond tourism to active engagement in critical issues. Gejman and
Shapiro will travel to Israel in June for a 10-day educational program
that introduces them to Israeli media and political leaders. They will
also participate in communications and public affairs internships for
local Jewish organizations, including preparing a special supplement to
JUF News. Write on for Israel is funded by the AVI CHAI Foundation.
"Chicagoland Jewish High School encourages its students
to participate in social and community programs and this is just one example
of how our students extend their education beyond the classroom," said
Head of School Mrs. Stein.

issue
CJHS parent Dr. Debbie Mir will be speaking on Water:
The Lifeblood of the Land and the People of Israel at 8 p.m. on Jan. 20
at NSS Beth El , 1175 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park. Israel is a world leader
in efficient irrigated agriculture, and has the largest plant for recycling
sewage in the world, with a growing desalination industry and mandatory
water-saving home appliances. In the mad rush, however, to “make the land
green” we’ve spoiled natural treasures by over pumping and contaminating
precious resources, turning fresh streams into toxic cesspools. Explore
Israel’s fascinating – and contradictory--environmental history. Contact
Harriet Robbins, Continuing Education Director, at 847-432-8900, ext.
243, or at host@nssbethel.org for more information. THERE IS NO FEE FOR
THIS PROGRAM. Debby Mir, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Geography and Environmental
Studies at Northeastern Illinois University, has extensive experience
