Mr. Tony Frank brings a strong background in Jewish education and administration to CJHS. Originally from the Chicago area, Mr. Frank made aliyah with his family when he was 14 years old. After serving in the Israeli army and earning a Bachelors degree from Hebrew University, Mr. Frank returned to the States to begin his career as an educator. He taught at Sager Solomon Schechter Middle School, then spent ten years as a member of the administrative team at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School.

Mr. Frank holds a Masters of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University and a Masters of Arts degree in Educational Administration from Northeastern Illinois University. He also completed the Senior Educators Program at Hebrew University's Melton Center for Jewish Education in the Diaspora. He has spent the last 18 months conducting research for his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His dissertation focuses on Jewish identity development in adolescence.

Dr. Ted Schaffner joined CJHS in August 2005 as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Before that, he had a distinguished 32-year career as a teacher and administrator at Highland Park High School that culminated in an 18-year tenure as Assistant Principal.

In July 2006, Dr. Schaffner was named Interim Head of School, also serving on the Education, Human Resource, and Site Committees. His insight, expertise, and commitment to CJHS were instrumental in helping us move forward with our academic and strategic goals as we searched for a permanent Head of School.

Bruce Scher, Academic Dean and Director of College Counseling, came to CJHS with 30 years of experience in the world of education. Most recently the Director of College Counseling at Barrington High School, he has also been a teacher of AP English, AP Spanish, and Dance. Outside the academic area, Mr. Scher is an experienced choreographer, and has directed a number of musicals and coached competitive speech. He has a true passion for education and for helping students through the college search process.

Mr. Scher's professional associations include the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC). He has twice served as president of IACAC. He has also made presentations on college-admission related topics at a number of state and national conferences.

A graduate of the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School and the University of Chicago, Rabbi Elliot Goldberg, CJHS’ Director of Religious Life, received a Wexner graduate fellowship to study at the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he earned a master’s degree in Jewish education and rabbinic ordination. Rabbi Goldberg also completed the Senior Educator Program at the Melton Center for Jewish Education at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Day School Leadership Training Institute at the Davidson School of Jewish Education at JTS.

Before coming to CJHS, Rabbi Goldberg served on the Judaic Studies faculty at the Milken Community High School in Los Angeles and as Rabbi-in-Residence at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Bergen County. He has spent more than 20 summers at Camp Ramah (New England, California, the Berkshires, Wisconsin, and Israel) both as a camper and staff member.

He is married to Rabbi Sheryl Katzman, Middle School Principal at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Chicago.
